A man was arrested for openly carrying a handgun into a Thornton, Colo., movie theater.

James Mapes, 48, of Northglenn was taken into custody after he entered the Cinebarre Movie Theater Sunday night with a handgun strapped to his waist “in an open carry position, visible to others,” the Thornton Police Department said in a statement. Several theaters in the complex were evacuated “as a precautionary measure,” police said.

Thornton is 10 miles northeast of Denver.

The theater serves alcohol, and Mapes was arrested for investigation of possession of a dangerous weapon in a liquor and beer establishment, The Denver Post reported Monday.
