Crane topples in Toronto
A construction crane toppled in Toronto Monday afternoon, bringing down power lines on top of a city bus with 30 people inside, authorities said.
The TTC bus passengers were trapped for about an hour before police gave the all-clear sign for them to get out, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Police Constable Ryan Willmer sent a Twitter message that all of them “seem to be OK.”
The crane operator was taken to a hospital with what were not believed to be life-threatening injuries, police Superintendent Ron Taverner said.
Taverner said the bus driver “really is a hero” for keeping the passengers calm during their ordeal.
The 1:20 p.m. incident knocked out power to about 400 Toronto Hydro customers. It wasn’t known when the electricity would be turned back on, the CBC said.
