At least 20 dead in Venezuela prison riot
Venezuela Corrections Minister Iris Varela confirmed Monday at least 20 people died in a weekend prison riot in Miranda state.
Varela said there was a violent confrontation Sunday between two “heavily armed” groups of inmates battling for power within the Yare I prison, El Nacional reported. She said a final casualty figure would not be available until authorities investigate the riot.
El Nacional said the dead included a relative of one of the inmates.
The BBC reported the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights said demonstrations and confrontations between rival gangs in Venezuela’s prisons produced more than 500 deaths last year.
