MLB: Chicago White Sox 2, N.Y. Yankees 1
Chris Sale allowed a lone run and struck out 13 over 7 2/3 innings Wednesday in carrying the Chicago White Sox past the New York Yankees 2-1.
Alex Rios hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth for the White Sox, who completed a three-game sweep of the Yankees. It was the first three-game home sweep of New York for Chicago in 21 years.
Sale (15-4) walked only one and gave up three hits, one of them a homer by Derek Jeter in the top of the sixth that forged a 1-1 tie. Sale is 7-0 in his last eight home starts.
Rios hit 20th homer of the campaign in the bottom of the sixth off Phil Hughes (12-11), who surrendered two runs on five hits in seven innings.
Addison Reed gave up a one-out single in the ninth before picking up his 23rd save.
Jeter homered in every game of the series to run his season total to 13.
New York’s lead over Tampa Bay in the American League East was trimmed to three games. Chicago stayed two games in front of second-place Detroit in the AL Central.
