Federer, Murray into Round of 16 in N.Y.

Top-seeded Roger Federer bested No. 25 Fernando Verdasco and Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray also advanced to the Round of 16 Saturday at the U.S. Open.

Federer, seeking his sixth U.S. Open title, had little trouble with the Spaniard, logging a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in third-round action.

His next opponent will the winner of Saturday night’s match between 16th-seeded Gilles Simon of France and No. 23 Mardy Fish of the United States.

Murray, meanwhile, moved on with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) decision over 30th-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. He’ll next will face the victor of a Saturday match between No. 15 Milos Raonic of Canada and American James Blake.

Also moving into the Round of 16 were 11th-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain, who beat American Jack Sock 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, and No. 12 Marin Cilic of Croatia, who managed a 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 victory over Japan’s Kei Nishikori.

Slovakia’s Martin Klizan also advanced with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 defeat of 32nd-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
