Berdych, Tipsarevic advance at Japan Open
Tomas Berdych and Janko Tipsarevic headed into the quarterfinals of the Japan Open tennis championships after straight-set wins Thursday.
Berdych, seeded second in Tokyo, defeated Alejandro Falla 6-3, 7-5. He won 86 percent — 44-of-51 — of the points on serve and had a break in each set to get by Falla.
The third-seeded Tipsarevic was on the court a relatively lengthy 1 hour, 49 minutes before finishing off a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Marco Chiudinelli. Tipsarevic didn”t drop serve but had to save six break points to keep that string intact.
Marcos Baghdatis eliminated fourth-seeded Juan Monaco 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. Both the breaks Baghdatis suffered were in the second set but he lost only six points in his five games serving in the third set.
No. 6-seeded Milos Raonic advanced when Viktor Troicki retired after Raonic won the first three games of the match and eighth-seeded Kei Nishikori dominated the last two sets in a 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 decision over Tommy Robredo. Also, qualifier Dmitry Tursunov beat Tatsuma Ito 7-5, 6-3.
Tipsarevic is paired against Raonic for Friday”s quarterfinals, which also have Berdych going against Nishikori and Baghdatis playing Tursunov. No. 1-seeded and defending champion Andy Murray draws seventh-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka in the other quarterfinal.
