‘Vertigo’ tops best movie list

Stewart won an academy awar for |*|The Philadelphia Story |*| and starred in the Christmas classic |*|It's a Wonderful Life.|*| He was nominated for best actor Oscars four other times and won a lifetime achievement award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1984.

The best film of all time is Alfred Hitchcock”s 1958 thriller “Vertigo,” a poll conducted by the British Film Institute”s Sight & Sound magazine suggested.

Orson Welles” “Citizen Kane” has topped the list, which is compiled every 10 years, since the poll”s inception in 1962, CBS said.

It slipped to No. 2 on the 2012 survey.

Coming in at No. 3 is “Tokyo Story,” followed by “The Rules of the Game” at No. 4, “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans” at No. 5, “2001: A Space Odyssey” at No. 6, “The Searchers” at No. 7, “Man with a Movie Camera” at No. 8, “The Passion of Joan of Arc” at No. 9 and “8 1/2″ at No. 10.

CBS said 846 critics, programmers, academics, distributors, writers and other cinephiles contributed their top 10 lists, which included a total of 2,045 different films, for the survey.
