Strangulation prompts window blind recall

The death of a 2-year old girl has prompted a recall of 454,000 Blind Xpress window blinds, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The CPSC said the Livonia, Mich. company was recalling 139,000 custom made vertical and 315,000 horizontal window blinds after a 2-year-old girl was from Commerce Township, Mich., was strangled by a loop in a vertical window blind cord.

The recall involves “all Blind Xpress custom-made vertical blinds that do not have a cord-tensioning device that attaches to the wall or floor, as well as all horizontal blinds that do not have inner cord stop devices,” the commission said.

The blinds under recall were sold in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana from January 1995 through December 2011 for $16 to $380.

Consumers were advised to stop using the window blinds and contact the Window Covering Safety Council for a free repair kit.
