Stocks begin week on up note

U.S. stocks started in the green and finished there Monday on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 21.34 points, or 0.16 percent, to close at 13,117.51.

The Nasdaq, which flirted with 3,000 throughout the day, closed at 2,989.91, up 22.01 points, 0.74 percent.

The Standard & Poor’s 500, which neared 1,400 in midday trading, picked up 3.24 points, or 0.23 percent, to 1,394.23.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the total listed volume was 2.9 billion shares.

The 10-year U.S. treasury bond was yielding 1.565 percent.

Against the euro, the dollar was trading at $1.2399 Monday from $1.2376 Friday. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar was trading at 78.24 yen from 78.56 yen Friday.

In London, the FTSE 100 closed at 5,808.77 points, up 21.49 or 0.37 percent.

In Japan, the Nikkei added 171.18 points, 2 percent, to close at 8,726.29.
